Gifted Students with Learning Disability: What you need to know to keep parents out of your Inbox
Session Outline:
The duality and disparity of gifted students with learning disability (GLD) present teachers with unusual challenges, and these can be exacerbated by parents who turn up with inches of IQ assessments and disability reports, and bark, “Here – I want you to do this!” What are teachers to make of GLD students’ asynchrony and erratic, inconsistent performance in the classroom context where evidence-based assessment is demanded? No prior knowledge assumed. No unexplained jargon. No PowerPoint (!). And plenty of easy-to-follow diagrams on paper handouts to help teachers explain this counter-intuitive conundrum to parents.
About the Presenter:
Carol Barnes is convenor of the NSW gifted association’s support group for parents and teachers of gifted children with learning disability (GLD. She is also Vice-President of the QAGTC Gold Coast Branch and convenor of that Branch’s parent support group. She is an invited lecturer on GLD at Griffith University, and has provided training on GLD for Education Queensland’s gifted education mentors (GEMs). Carol is also a lawyer but, most importantly, the mother of two gifted university students, each with multiple learning disabilities.
