Did you tick ANY boxes?

If so you probably know a gifted child. Formal assessment may be required to ascertain the degree of giftedness and special educational provisions will be necessary for a gifted child to perform well and maintain good self esteem. The higher the ability, the more at risk is the child if not identified and appreciated. Gifted children need differentiated schooling that includes acceleration and ability grouping.

There are many signs of giftedness, some of which may not be obvious to parents and teachers. As part of their precocious development, other characteristics for you to consider are:

  • High level intensity, sensitivity, complexity
  • Unusual energy
  • Heightened awareness, empathy

Remember what is unusual for the general population can be ‘normal’ for the gifted!

Remember also that gifted children can have disabilities that mask their potential. For these children a different identification process is advisable. Be careful to involve only professionals who are experienced in working with gifted children.
