THEN:  Circus Stars with an introduction into the world of circus training as a well- rounded physical and creative outlet for children from all walks of life. The Circus Stars program is based around 5 key elements of why circus works for children: to have fun, to take safe risks, to build trust and work as a team, to encourage individuality, and to work hard on our skills. Some of the activities we will explore in the workshops include: Hula Hoops, Juggling, human pyramids, partner acrobatic balances, tumbling, skipping and circus obstacle course.

Our presenter Kristy Seymour is a circus artist and emerging scholar with over 18 years experience in the Australian circus sector as a performer, trainer, artistic director and administrator and more recently, as a researcher. In 2012 Kristy completed her Honours thesis “How Circus training can enhance the well-being of children with autism and their families”. Connecting her work to the international sector, in 2015 she undertook a residency as researcher in residence at Ecole Nationale De Cirque and Cirque du Soleil Headquarters (Quebec). Her research has been published in New Theatre Quarterly and has forth-coming publications in Performance Matters (May 2018) and De Gruyer (Early 2018). Kristy has her own circus school, Circus Stars, solely dedicated to children with autism, which was the topic of her recent TEDx talk (June 2017). Kristy is currently completing her doctoral research titled “Bodies, Temporality and Spatiality in Australian Contemporary Circus” at Griffith University.
