Featuring and Dr Paul HutchinsDr Paul Hutchins is Head of the Child Development Unit at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, and Senior Paediatric Consultant at the Children's Hospital Education Research Institute (CHERI). Dr Hutchins has particular interests and expertise in developmental problems in learning, organisation and social interaction. He will discuss how comprehensive collaborative supports can promote the success and talents of gifted students who also have subtle language disorders, ADHD and associated problems. Special guest speaker: Dr John Munro Dr John Munro, is Head of Studies in Exceptional Learning and Gifted Education, The University of Melbourne. He will present his work on catering for gifted and talented mathematics students in classrooms, and how to build in schools a professional learning capacity to enhance the extent to which the needs of gifted and talented students are met. He also will present on his research in gifted learning disabilities and its implications for classroom practice. Invited speakers: ('differentiation' - creating an environment of achievement for underachievers in schools) Dr Wilma Vialle, University of Wollongong ('twice exceptional' - gifted students with other notable characteristics affecting performance) Barry Bartley, Principal, South Grafton High NSW ('self-selection' - management strategies for primary and secondary education that easily accommodate gifted students) The quality of our support for giftedness is demonstrated by how each of us contributes to successful futures for the children. At this conference you can see and hear about our best efforts to provide exemplary practices - professional education and ancillary support services, primary secondary and tertiary education initiatives, advocacy and community action - each demonstrating progress and achievement in creating environments that develop high achieving fulfilled youngsters. Venue: Yeronga State High School, Brisbane This conference brings together teachers, parents, other professionals and community members who play important roles in raising the next generation, focusing on the children who are gifted and talented. We aim to demonstrate our knowledge and achievements - and theirs - to increase awareness and expertise to better ensure that gifted children and their advocates continue to excel. Workshops and seminars at the conference will assist school personnel to improve learning outcomes by increasing student engagement, examining teachers' role and serving their needs. Experienced practitioners will lead professionals to look closely at how to identify the full range of gifts and talents, and to expand on their classroom differentiation strategies, and offer students greater choice in their learning. Specific areas such as teaching of critical literacy will be a focus of this conference.
