"What are the ethics of cloning?"

"Is euthanasia ever permissible?"

"What obligations do we have to help those who are poor?"

In this two-day workshop, high ability Grades 8-10 students who like to think critically about what is morally right and wrong will sharpen their ability to reason effectively about moral and social issues, as well as in a wide range of other disciplines. Students will learn some basic moral theory, as well as how to recognize and map the structure of arguments, how to evaluate arguments for their validity or strength, and how to frame counterexamples, objections or rebuttals. Using these reasoning and theoretical tools, we will engage in some philosophy of our own, exploring some of the most important and current issues we face as individuals and members of a multi-cultural democracy.

Brain and Thinking for Grades 8-9-10 Group 4 - Year 8, 9 and 10 - a 1 day course on Tuesday: Code = 4.T.2
Monika von Oppell and Charles Rheault

This workshop will be broken up into three separate parts over the course of the 4 hours. The first aspect will be investigating how we learn with the use of practical demonstration of looking at brain functionality and creative exercises demonstrating the different parts of thinking which takes place within our minds. These exercises will engage the students in a non classical style which will culminate for them in the discovery of how best they as thinkers operate. The second component will be made up of practical examples in the use of mind-mapping demonstrating techniques in this area which when done effectively will increase the students overall understanding of topics covered as well as to enhance their understanding of the knowledge gained throughout this exercise. The third element in the workshop will be again, a practical dynamic use of the CoRT Tool "CAF" (Consider all factors). This powerful DATT instruction method will allow for the students to sweep broadly amongst information in determining relevant facts from fiction and thus in combination with Edward de Bono's HATS come to a conclusion with respect to a problem solving exercise.
