Tall Poppies

2001 Regional Gifted and Talented Conference

8 and 9 July 2001

Venue: Central Queensland University, Rockhampton

In the hope that Thomas Gray's* 18th century words, 'Tall Poppies Celebrated or Born to Blush Unseen?' don't apply to our approach towards our potentially gifted individuals today, it's about time we overcame a tendency to shy away or attack at the mention of the word 'gifted'. Ask yourself:

Are we prepared to counter statements like
"everyone is gifted or no one is gifted"?

Are we confident enough to value people with all kinds of gifts and talents?

Have we identified and developed the full range of talents in our youth?

Our leaders tell us that Australia is the clever country and Queensland, the smart state. To pay more than lip-service to these claims we need to find pathways for developing the talents of all members of our school communities. The challenge is:

We need to demonstrate that our society need no longer shy away from the notion of celebrating the achievements of the tall poppies and acknowledging their right to recognition and appreciation. "How best can we do this?"

Come to our conference and contribute to the debate about gifted and talented.
